And we should all do the same. France and the Marquis de Lafayette reminded America how important liberty is, even when some Americans wondered if the war was worth it and if tea wasn't sweeter in Britain.

Kinja'd!!!

As long as we believe in freedom, reason and humor, terrorism will never win.

TIL Tea is only sweet if you put too much sugar in. I have none.

We in the UK stand with our brothers in France.

Amen. As much as we like to make fun of the French, America would not have happened without them. Even after helping out in those two wars, our debt is far from paid.

But without USA, France would no longer exist, neither democracy in Europe.

Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't change the fact that we still owe them.

I served along side French Army folks in A'stan and they are a great Ally to have by our side. The french bashing never made sense to me.

What I mean is that freedom of speech won't protect you religious radicals, you still need to watch what you say.

But they stood for us, when we were just a few little states who still had problems with the locals, in a war against the mighty British Empire. We weren't the global superpower that we are today or the colonial power that France was back in WW2.

They could've said that it wasn't their problem and that they have enough trouble back in Europe, but they didn't. They knew that the ideas of Voltaire, Diderot, Montesquieu and Rousseau, ideas that changed the world in many ways, would've been dead if they let those young, American states, go down.

So, you basically support terrorism as a response to cartoons?

All I'm saying is that freedom of speech won't protect you from people disagreeing with you, some of which could be people with radical beliefs and rifles. Freedom of speech is great but it can't protect you from people who don't follow the rules.

Yes, but as a citizen who pays taxes, the government should protect you from people who want to harm you. That's what modern society is based on and that's why freedom of expression is such a powerful concept.

I was under the impression that, for the most part at least, they kinda did it to piss off/sap the resources of the British. Proxy war, and so on.

Well, that too. But only because Britain and Spain were getting more colonies. And the creation of America eventually stopped the advancing Spanish, who were in Florida.

Also, now you see why the European Union is a good idea? Peace and cooperation is a lot more profitable than long wars. Even here, the South got secessionist ideas but we kicked their ass. If the South(or Texas) was alone, the differences between the South and the North would've been as big as the differences between Western Europe and Eastern Europe, or worse.

I'm just saying, their primary motivation was likely strategic, rather than ideological, in nature.

Anyway, I've always thought the European Union was a good idea. The execution's shaky in plenty of places, but that's true of pretty much every political entity.

Well they can try, but someone's always able to kill you, the government can't stop individuals from being killed, nobody gets escorts or anything like that. But I obviously do agree it's useful for people to voice their opinions, even about the government themselves, and so the gov't can't "get rid of" or imprison people who disapprove of their rule and whatnot.

Yep, I think Europe should be a federation, using the American model.

One constitution that everybody agrees on, with states, rather than countries, with a single bicameral parliament and a president, voted by all the people. One army with a single central command. With unified secret agencies(to do a better job than multiple agencies in each country). States with equal rights. With 4 senators and 6 congressmen for each state. With unified government agencies(or ministries or whatever you call them). And obviously with a single space agency and unified education and scientific institutes.

Think about all the efficiency.
